Maria Weissenstein in the municipality of Deutschnofen / Nova Ponente is an abbey and one of the best known places of pilgrimage in South Tyrol. The many pilgrims marvel not only at the 17th century Baroque church but also the breathtaking panoramic view of the Ortler group of mountains and the Schlern Rosengarten natural preserve where the Schlern - a South Tyrolean landmark – is located. The abbey of Maria Weissenstein came into being after the Virgin Mary appeared to the ailing farmer, Leonhard Weissensteiner, in 1553. To give thanks for his cure, he built a chapel where the people could go to ask Mary for help. This original chapel quickly became a destination for many pilgrims. In 1673 a church was built.

As a cardinal, Pope John Paul I spent his summer vacations at the abbey, and Pope John Paul II visited the pilgrimage site in 1988.
